I write about food, migration, dance, motherhood, and literature. In my work, I am particularly interested in exploring the ways food relates to culture, the positive uses of imperfection, and the future of the humanities.
My work has appeared in the New York Times, Times Literary Supplement, Los Angeles Review of Books, Southwest Review, The Yale Review, Petits Propos Culinaires, Serious Eats, Washington Post, The Atlantic, Aeon, Politico.eu, Zócalo Public Square, Longreads, and the The Marginalia Review of Books, among other outlets.
I am also the editor of Rumba Under Fire: The Arts of Survival from West Point to Delhi, a crossover collection of essays and poems on art and crisis, published by Punctum Books in 2016.
For fun, and to experiment with ideas, I author three blogs: atisheh.com, with writing on dance and fitness, Food Gone Wrong, which is dedicated to kitchen and supermarket disasters, and The Cooking Romanian, with occasional scribbles on food and Romanian cuisine.
My essays have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and the James Beard Foundation’s MFK Fisher Distinguished Writing Award, and received the McGinnis-Ritchie Award for nonfiction. One piece has been included in Best American Essays 2016, edited by Jonathan Franzen and Bob Atwan, with others selected as notables in 2013, 2017, and 2018. My work has also been reprinted in Best Food Writing 2017, edited by Holly Hughes, and in Jay McInerney’s Wine Reads: A Literary Anthology of Wine Writing (2018). I recently served as nonfiction judge for the Sonora Review’s 2017 writing contest.
