I am a scholar and writer.

I am the professor for medieval English literature at the University of Bonn, where I organize the Bonn Lectures in the Public Humanities. I write essays, criticism, and am a columnist at the Times Literary Supplement. With Mary Wellesley, I hosted the London Review of Books podcast miniseries, Close Readings: Encounters with Medieval Women; we have a new series, Medieval Beginnings, coming out in 2023.

I am available for research presentations, literary readings, workshops on public writing for academics, and one-on-one coaching for scholars hoping to write for the general public.

If you’d like to be updated about my publications or other activities, and hear my occasional thoughts on creativity, writing, and reading, please subscribe to my newsletter, The Process.
